THE COACH HOUSE
The
Coach House forms part of the Rectory Buildings of St. Mary's Church,
in the Oldswinford area of Stourbridge, West Midlands.
Until
about fifteen years ago the condition of the building had degenerated
into a state of extremen dilapidation. Windows were boarded, there were
no services, the interior had been vandalised and there was no access
to the first floor.
A
few 'Friends of the Coach House' combined to turn the building into
an arts and crafts centre, principally for the teaching of socially
isolated people. It required great effort on the part of 'The Friends'
to obtain sufficient funds and manpower to effect the transformation.
The
new centre was officially opened in 1995 by the then Archbishop of Canterbury,
Dr George Carey, whilst he was on a visit to the adjacent St. Mary's
Church.
It
is now a listed building and provides a wide range of courses and facilities,
both for its own students and for lettings to many and varied local
community groups, one of which is the Coachhouse Writers.
The
Coach House has a Management Committee, which is responsible for day
to day matters connected with the successful running of the operation,
and it was granted charity status in 2005.
